Frank St. John, P.E., LEED AP

President

Education: Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis - B.S., Interdisciplinary Engineering (Mechanical Option), 1973

Mr. St. John has over 35 years of consulting engineering experience. He has been involved in numerous utility-related studies, master plans, and design projects involving chillers, pumps, cooling towers, air compressors, boilers, and heat exchangers. In addition, he also has extensive experience with a number of facility expansions and renovations for hospital, industrial, and higher education clients that have required heating, ventilating, air conditioning, fire protection, plumbing, power, lighting and telecom designs. Several of these have also included building commissioning. As president of the firm, his current responsibilities include office operations, marketing, project management, and technical support.

John R. Yoder, LEED AP

Principal

Education: Columbus Technical Institute - A.A.S, HVAC Technology, 1980

Mr. Yoder has over 28 years of professional experience. He has been involved in various mechanical engineering studies, design and construction projects involving chilled water systems, cooling towers, compressed air systems, HVAC systems, plumbing, steam distribution and piping design. Mr. Yoder’s expertise lies in designing central plants involving chilled water (industrial campus systems and district cooling), steam, high-temperature hot water and compressed air.  Mr. Yoder also has an extensive construction background, having worked for mechanical contractors for a period of 12 years. Positions included field supervision, cost estimating, project design, layout, and coordination, and project management. This practical experience, coupled with the consulting experience, provide for a unique perspective to better focus on the total needs of the client, to complete projects successfully on time and within budget.

Terrance E. DeBoo

Principal

Education: Purdue University - B.S, Mechanical Engineering Technology, 1978

Mr. DeBoo has over 23 years of consulting engineering experience where his developed expertise is in heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) design. Mr. DeBoo has considerable experience in coordinating architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines, as well as in working directly with contractors to resolve field issues in the owner’s interest. He has been involved in numerous mechanical system start-ups and in troubleshooting normal and complex start-up situations.

Mr. DeBoo has extensive experience in utility master planning. He has assisted in the development of utility usage forecasts for site chilled water, steam, city water, fire protection, purified water, compressed air and natural gas. He has led project teams in long-term planning of utility generation and distribution systems to meet client growth and budget criteria. Mr. DeBoo has also performed feasibility studies for a wide range of mechanical systems options to justify installation based on economic analysis.

Additionally, Mr. DeBoo has served as project engineer on both large and small mechanical system renovation projects, including the design of heat recovery systems, ventilation upgrades, space air conditioning, utility tunnel piping and chiller relocations.

Ralph J. Power, P.E.

Principal

Education: Purdue University - B.S., Electrical Engineering, 1981

Registrations: Indiana, Texas

Mr. Power has been a consulting engineer throughout his professional career since graduation from Purdue University. Trained as an electrical engineer, he has designed quality power, lighting, fire alarm and telecommunication systems for new and renovated higher education, governmental, industrial and healthcare facilities.

As a principal at Applied Engineering, he serves in the role of principal-in-charge, project manager, and continues to have a hand in the engineering, especially on larger and more complex projects. His leadership includes the overall coordination and knowledge of the scope of other team members including those in other fields such as mechanical, civil and structural engineering, architects and other professional consultants. His primary professional goal is to provide the best engineering solutions possible to meet the client’s needs and wants, all with a careful eye on their goals, budget and schedule.

Currently Mr. Power serves some of Applied’s top higher education, governmental and industrial clients. He also works with his partners in client and business development.

Rex O. Stockwell, P.E., LEED AP

Principal

Education: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology - B.S., Mechanical Engineering, 1969

Registrations: Indiana

Mr. Stockwell has over 30 years of experience in the consulting engineering business, including successful roles in design and engineering, project management, staff management, client advocacy, firm ownership and owner representation. He has been responsible for mechanical/electrical engineering systems for a variety of projects for higher education, health care, industrial, governmental and commercial facilities. His experience over the last 20 years has focused on higher education projects (especially research laboratories) and health care projects (especially hospitals). His particular expertise is in HVAC systems, especially large complex systems, including building air systems and chilled water and steam systems, and mechanical codes. Mr. Stockwell is most interested in promoting sustainable and energy-efficient solutions.

Mr. Stockwell has been with Applied since November 2005. His particular responsibilities are to serve as the principle-in-charge for projects and to assist in client development. He also provides leadership for projects and support for mechanical engineering.

For the four years prior to joining Applied, Mr. Stockwell served as the University Engineer and Director of Engineering for the Physical Facilities Group at Purdue University. The job included aspects of working with internal clients and A/E consultants on a variety of projects and problems. The position provided the experience of working from the perspective of the owner.

Timothy M. Anderson, P.E., LEED AP

Mr. Anderson has over 20 years of engineering and managerial experience. He currently serves the firm as a principal. His engineering background includes district chilled water and steam generation, dust collection, refrigeration, and HVAC. Mr. Anderson has extensive experience in managing projects and working with contractors, vendors, and plant maintenance personnel. Mr. Anderson has directed and been involved with numerous facility design and installation projects involving HVAC, boiler and steam distribution, industrial exhaust/ventilation, dust collection, chilled water, and refrigerant piping. He has designed and managed a variety of projects for institutional, educational, industrial, commercial, and health care facilities. His experience includes overall responsibility for project design, construction documents, specifications, and field observation.

Mark W. Lehman, RCDD

Associate

Education: Purdue University - B.S., Electrical Engineering Technology, 1987

Mr. Lehman has over 14 years of engineering and managerial experience. He currently serves the firm as an associate in the telecommunications, electrical, instrumentation, and validation disciplines. His engineering experience includes various industrial automation projects, design of power distribution systems, and preparation of validation documentation.

Mr. Lehman has experience in commissioning and validation projects involving GMP and non-GMP systems. He has prepared commissioning and validation documents, system qualification documents and shakedown procedures for process utility systems.

Mark is also a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) for telecommunications.

Charan Ahluwalia

Senior Project Manager

Mr. Ahluwalia has more than 30 years of professional experience and serves as a senior project manager for the firm specializing in mechanical engineering. His diverse project experience includes the design and construction management of health care facilities, educational facilities, commercial and industrial facilities, hotels, and shopping malls. He has designed HVAC, plumbing, water supply, and external sewerage services for a number of large building complexes.

Mr. Ahluwalia has versatile experience in design and project management as he has worked overseas in the Middle East and England. He has considerable expertise in utility plants and utilities engineering, including chilled water, tower water, steam, and condensate. He also has particular specialization in health care projects. Mr. Ahluwalia has been involved in the renovation of operating rooms, hemodialysis units, LDRs and NICUs, where specialty HVAC applications for the room pressurization, temperature, and humidity controls were required. He also designed and directed large new hospital projects, consisting of ICUs, CCUs, ORs, cath labs, MRIs, CT-Scan, isolation rooms, and life line facilities.

Mr. Ahluwalia also has extensive experience in post-contract supervision of contractor's work, ensuring quality control, field management, test, balance and commissioning.

Mike McKiernan, P.E., LEED AP

Mr. McKiernan has over 30 years of professional experience in design and project management. He currently serves the firm as a senior project manager. He has extensive experience in the design of HVAC systems for health care and laboratory facilities. In addition, he has design experience with gas, water and waste systems for medical and research laboratory facilities.

Mr. McKiernan's HVAC experience includes air, exhaust, smoke control, steam, heating hot water, chilled water systems, and chilled water plant design. His experience includes overall responsibility for project design, construction documents, specifications, field observation, construction administration, equipment start-up, and system commissioning.

Mike is also a LEED Accredited Professional.

Susan Schuster, P.E.

Senior Project Manager

Registrations: Indiana

Ms. Schuster has over 19 years of experience in the chemical/mechanical engineering fields. Ms. Schuster's experience includes working as a design engineer in the pharmaceutical industry.

Ms. Schuster's consulting engineering experience includes coordinating projects with clients, production representatives, owner's management, other consultants, purchasing agents, equipment vendors, manufacturers, and contractors to facilitate successful project completion. She is experienced at specifying process equipment, piping, valves, pumps, and related systems. She has directed the preparation of final design documents of projects for both fixed bid and time and materials installations. Ms. Schuster has a strong financial background for performing economic analyses, weighing alternative designs, and monitoring the financial success of each project for each client.

Ms. Schuster's technical expertise is in process design, primarily in the pharmaceutical and water treatment fields.

Darryl Beals, P.E., LEED AP

Mr. Beals has over 32 years of engineering experience, 25 years of which has been as an HVAC consultant in commercial, medical, governmental, industrial, and higher education facilities.

His range of experience encompasses nearly all aspects of consulting to include studies, scope of work definition, all phases of design, cost estimating, and specifications. Over the last six years, he has also expanded his activities to include marketing, contract negotiations, and management of multi-discipline projects.

Mr. Beals takes pride in getting to know his clients, their design criteria and their needs so that he can select the appropriate design processes and systems to satisfy the needs of the client. He also takes care to not only produce workable designs, but also systems that can be maintained for years to come.

Bart Pietrzak

Project Manager

Education: Lodz Polytechnical University, Poland - M.S., Electrical Engineering, 1973

Mr. Pietrzak has over 20 years of engineering and managerial experience, both foreign and American. He currently serves the firm as a project manager and electrical/instrumentation engineer.

Mr. Pietrzak's engineering background includes electrical power engineering. His past projects have involved industrial lighting as well as various industrial power distribution systems, including co-generation and emergency/standby systems.

His major field of expertise is industrial automation. He has been involved in numerous studies and design projects applying modern control technologies in commercial and industrial conditions.

Mr. Pietrzak has spent much of his career working for a contractor in the energy management and control field. His applications of Direct Digital Control and global control strategies resulted in significant energy savings. In the field of industrial instrumentation and process control, Mr. Pietrzak was involved in several projects for pharmaceutical and automotive industries.

Dan Shurina, P.E., LEED AP

Project Manager

Mr. Shurina has over 20 years of diverse professional engineering experience designing, specifying, and maintaining mechanical systems and machinery within industries.

Mr. Shurina's expertise is in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning design, but he is also proficient at process piping and plumbing. Mr. Shurina has extensive experience in managing projects and working with contractors, vendors, and plant maintenance personnel. Mr. Shurina has directed and been involved with numerous facility design and installation projects involving HVAC, material movement, natural gas distribution, boiler and steam distribution, industrial exhaust/ventilation, dust/mist collection, compressed air, fluid pumping, fire protection, chilled water, refrigerant piping, process piping, and sanitary and domestic plumbing systems. Mr. Shurina is also proficient in utilizing various software modeling programs in the execution of his work.

Eric Wolf, P.E.

Project Manager

Mr. Wolf has over 18 years of diverse professional engineering experience. His expertise lies in the study, design, and specification of electrical power and instrumentation systems.

Mr. Wolf has broad experience in electrical power and instrumentation design and planning for facilities. His experience has involved the design of electrical systems from conceptual development to finished construction documents. His experience has also involved providing engineering support and management during construction. He excels in optimizing the design of electrical power systems from the top down for maximum safety, efficiency, and maintainability. His experience has also included the use of Power Tools, ETAP and EDSA software to perform load flow, short-circuit and coordination studies.

Past projects, large and small, have involved the design of medium and low voltage power distribution systems for institutional, industrial and commercial facilities. Design experience has included lighting, low voltage power distribution, medium voltage power distribution, substations, switchboards, transformers, panelboards, generators, protective relaying, motor control centers, variable speed drives, motors, electrical controls, heat tracing, and short circuit and coordination studies.

Doug Walker, P.E.

Mr. Walker has over ten years of professional experience. Recently, he has led design processes to build a new insulation manufacturing line within an existing plant site and to modify utility systems at an airport maintenance facility to serve the new terminal and concourse. He has experience in HVAC and mechanical utilities design for commercial, educational, and industrial facilities. Mr. Walker is proficient at the practical use of computer software to solve engineering problems, to communicate project information, and to plan and track project delivery.

Brad Wertz, LEED AP

Project Engineer

Education: IUPUI - B.S., Electrical Engineering Technology, 1991

Mr. Wertz has over 15 years of consulting and plant engineering experience.  His expertise lies in the study, design, and specification of electrical power and instrumentation systems.  Mr. Wertz strengths are in medium and low voltage electrical distribution, utility service, electrical code compliance and arc flash analysis and implementation.  Having been both a Plant Engineer and a Consultant, Mr. Wertz has had the pleasure of planning, estimating, designing, specifying, purchasing, installing and maintaining all types of electrical, power infrastructure, control and communication systems.
